The work of Norbert Klassen manifested itself in theater, performance as well as the
visual arts. In the middle of the 1960's the Duisburger actor moved to Berne,Switzerland. From this point on he founded the theater collective "Studio am Montag" as well as "STOP.P.T.", becoming one of the defining figures of Bernese performance art.

With 12-hour presentations or minimal performances consisting of the smoke of a single cigarette, Klassen sounded out the expanses and limits of the stage. In addition he has left behind installative works, drawings and objects.
"Warum applaudiert ihr nicht?" is the first comprehensive documentation of his work. Objects and documents from the estate of Norbert Klassen, contributions from Boris Nieslony, Jürgen O. Olbrich, Urs Peter Schneider, Manuela Trapp, and many others trace the impelling spirit of Norbert Klassen and his work.
